C&O Canal Bike Trail
The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park, known also as the C&O Canal, extends over 184 miles into Cumberland, Maryland. Historically, it was the central means of transporting goods on the Potomac River, such as grain, coal, and lumber. Farmers, merchants, and manufacturers all counted on the C&O Canal to ship their goods and it was an important part of Maryland’s economy. Today, it’s still thriving as an attraction for hikers, cyclists, conservationists, historians, and tourists. The C&O Bike Trail is a great way to experience the Canal Towpath. Cyclists will also enjoy the few campsites available to hikers and bikers.
