The Great Allegheny Passage

The Great Allegheny Passage consists of 150 miles of trails for hiking and biking. Some sections are also ideal for horseback riding. Parts of the Passage are still under construction, but when it’s done, it will connect Cumberland, Maryland up to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The trail already encompasses the famous C&O Canal towpath in the city of Cumberland, MD. This part of the trail stretches along for over 300 miles and includes Duquesne and Washington, D.C. Part of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, the Great Allegheny Passage is a part of area river basins that include the Upper Ohio and Potomac rivers. In winter, visitors can enjoy snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. The trail is unusual in that visitors find themselves walking through towns and cities as well as through serene natural settings.
